Earth Hour: Park Hotels to switch off lights this Saturday

In a first of its kind initiative by any hotel chain in India, the Park Hotels today said it would switch off lights at all their properties across India to observe Earth Hour tomorrow night.

Earth Hour would also be observed in the other properties owned by the Kolkata-based Apeejay Surrendra group which runs the luxury hotel chain like the Oxford Bookstores, real estate properties, two schools and 50,000 acres of tea plantations area in Assam. Earth Hour is an initiative by the international wildlife and international body WWF where citizens and organisations around the globe show their support for action on climate change by turning off lights for one hour from 8.30 pm.

A company spokesperson told PTI that all the twelve Park Hotels located in various cities will participate in the Earth Hour and will switch off non-essential lights and internally will switch to minimal lighting. Special lights and smoke-free candles will be placed in the rooms to be used in emergency situation.

Candlelight dinners are being organised in the restaurants and ‘Earth cocktail’ served at bars to create a buzz and to excite the guests towards the cause. According to a statement by the company, the total units of energy saved at their hotels will be 5000 KW for that one hour while that for real estate properties will be 2000 KW.

Last year, Earth Hour reached out to over a billion people with a little over 6 million Indians participating in this global show of support. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has been appointed as the national brand ambassador of the cause.

Plumen added to permanent collection at the V&A

The Plumen 001 lamp has been added to the permanent collection at the Victoria & Albert museum.

Described as the world’s first designer energy efficient light bulb, the Plumen 001 was awarded the Brit Insurance Design of the Year in 2011, and has received widespread recognition.

With accolades from the Finnish Design Museum and the Cooper Hewitt Collection in New York, London’s V&A is the latest museum to add the lamp to its permanent collection. It will take pride of place alongside artifacts taken from the cultures of Europe, North America, Asia and Northern Africa.

The Plumen 001 was designed in partnership by Hulger and Samuel Wilkinson.

Nicolas Roope, Hulger co-founder, said: “Hulger are delighted that the Plumen 001 has been included in the V&A permanent collection.

“This endorsement has helped to move from last year’s buzz and excitement to a longer term presence as both a design object and as a symbol for design’s central role in guiding consumption towards a better place.”

Designed to show the industry that energy efficient lighting didn’t have to be boring and without style or substance, the Plumen 001 was never further developed or modified, helping it gain cult design status.

Samuel Wilkinson, the industrial designer who designed the Plumen 001 with Hulger, said: “It’s really nice to be appreciated in that way and that it joins the permanent collection of V&A alongside such an amazing set of products.

“It’s great to be held up with products of that standard and hopefully now it will stand the test of time as a recognised iconic form.”
