Plumen added to permanent collection at the V&A

The Plumen 001 lamp has been added to the permanent collection at the Victoria & Albert museum.

Described as the world’s first designer energy efficient light bulb, the Plumen 001 was awarded the Brit Insurance Design of the Year in 2011, and has received widespread recognition.

With accolades from the Finnish Design Museum and the Cooper Hewitt Collection in New York, London’s V&A is the latest museum to add the lamp to its permanent collection. It will take pride of place alongside artifacts taken from the cultures of Europe, North America, Asia and Northern Africa.

The Plumen 001 was designed in partnership by Hulger and Samuel Wilkinson.

Nicolas Roope, Hulger co-founder, said: “Hulger are delighted that the Plumen 001 has been included in the V&A permanent collection.

“This endorsement has helped to move from last year’s buzz and excitement to a longer term presence as both a design object and as a symbol for design’s central role in guiding consumption towards a better place.”

Designed to show the industry that energy efficient lighting didn’t have to be boring and without style or substance, the Plumen 001 was never further developed or modified, helping it gain cult design status.

Samuel Wilkinson, the industrial designer who designed the Plumen 001 with Hulger, said: “It’s really nice to be appreciated in that way and that it joins the permanent collection of V&A alongside such an amazing set of products.

“It’s great to be held up with products of that standard and hopefully now it will stand the test of time as a recognised iconic form.”
